Mosquito Combat – Black Flag Propane Fogger

by Michael Vorel

Mosquito’s are a serious issue in Florida and sometimes you need to purchase products to slow down mosquito’s before all your blood is drawn from your body! The Black Flag Propane Fogger is a product that I recently purchased from Lowes and is an interesting device (see my video review). At $69, the propane fogger works like a gas grill in addition to fogging Insecticide.

Once you turn it on you “pump” the trigger to release the chemical into the hot chamber that creates fog.

Entertainment Dangers
After the 2 minute heat-up period it creates a nice fog that seems like a stage fog. You can always recreate a rock band stage scene but if you breathe in the fog you may not make it to the next song.

What I found was that if you use it right before a party or swimming at 5pm it really worked. Whether the fog got on my clothes or just stayed around I didn’t get bit. Normally I get attacked with easily 5 bites in a few minutes. After swimming i went out front and was attacked (didn’t spray out front) so my feeling is for under $100 it’s worth a shot.

Fabulous Mosquito Facts (might want to know if you wish to rid your space of them)

  • Mosquitoes go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult or imago (from Wikipedia Article). The first three stages are aquatic and last 5–14 days, depending on the species and the ambient temperature. The adult females can live up to a month (or more in captivity) but most probably do not live more than 1–2 weeks in nature.
  • Adult mosquitoes usually mate within a few days after emerging from the pupal stage. In most species, the males form large swarms, usually around dusk, and the females fly into the swarms to mate.
  • Males live for about a week, feeding on nectar and other sources of sugar. Females will also feed on sugar sources for energy but usually require a blood meal for the development of eggs.
  • A mosquito can fly for 1 to 4 hours continuously at up to 1–2 km/h travelling up to 7.5 mi in a night (wow)
  • The dragonfly eats mosquitoes at all stages of development and is quite effective in controlling populations (Can you breed them?)
