Nike+ SportBand Running Watch Review

by Michael Vorel

I have been running since June and recently invested in the Nike+ SportBand to work with my Nike Vomero IV running shoes. The $59 device is amazing and includes the shoe insert that fit right into my Nike’s. Now I can review my pace, time and calories burned while I run, see the results online and love it. I shot a video review that can be found here as well.

What’s Cool About It!

  • The watch is made from rubber and seems built well.
  • You wear it upside down on your wrist so when running you lift your arm up to read. I think it’s so you see the Nike Logo on your wrist but actually works better.
  • The Watch part is detachable and is basically a water resistance USB plug design.
  • Automatic battery recharge when Nike+ Link is plugged into your computer
  • The watch face has one LCD with readings that can change by pushing the lower button on bottom edge of the watch.
  • The one large button is used to start the recording, pause and stop.
  • When you complete your run you hold down the large button for 3 seconds and it records the data in the watch.
  • Of special note – the Nike+ SportBand memory saves 30 hours’ worth of your workouts for review which is good for when you are running on say a business trip!

After Your Run

  • Upon returning from your run, you pull the watch part off the wrist band and insert into your PC or MAC. I use my MacBook Pro for this and automatically pulls up your Nike+ account (nikeplus.com ) and loads your run. Note – Requires Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later, Windows Vista, or Windows XP (SP2) Home or Professional and needs fast Internet access since heavy application to load.
  • In a few seconds your run appears on the screen and you can review your pace, calories burned, time and distance.
  • If you click See all Runs you can see a chart of your runs and compare them.
  • Inside you can set goals and challenges, run 5k, 10k, etc. and includes full training references and automatic settings to push yourself.

Overall, an excellent product and lots of fun. I run 3 times a week and never leave the house without it!

What do you use for music? I carry my iPod Touch when running – sort of a hassle, but it’s got my running playlist and Nike+ in one place.

Funny you should ask, after my run yesterday I was so hot I jumped in the pool and forgot I was wearing an Ipod Shuffle. It’s a not really lighting up at this point but have a reserve. It’s just a basic 1GB player that clips on my shorts and use regular apple headphones. Nothing fancy but the new one will change songs by your voice and that would be cool.
