As a huge fan of camping & coffee technology, the JetBoil Personal Cooking System with optional coffee press attachment is a unique combination for the outdoor fanatic. Good coffee while camping is essential in my book and seems to be a dual purpose stove. Although this all sounds great I do have some reservations about this product with so many add-ons so please read on.

Concept of JetBoil

Attach a JetBoil fuel canister to the bottom (hear other 225g canister Butane/propane canister fuel cans work as well) (please note that the fuel does not come with the stove you need to buy separately)

Boils Water - 0.5 liter of water in 2.42 minutes (I thought it should of been faster but very good) (11 liters per 100g of fuel)

Maximum Flame - 100g canister per 42 minutes (Doing the math .42g/minute means the large container provides 94.50 minutes of cooking)

Dimensions - 7.1 x 4.5 x 4.1 inches

Weight - 15.3 ounces (not including fuel or press)

Tell me more about the JetBoil Concept:

FluxRing heat exchanger improves fuel efficiency and has built in wind screen (important as most stoves go out when windy)

Insulated Neoprene cover won’t burn and keeps the water or coffee hot as well as heating efficiency

Easy lighting with Piezo igniter and no need to pump or prime the stove (never liked that)

Burner and cup fit together into a nice lightweight solution for small trips. On larger excursions I might recommend a different product.

Concerns

The Coffee press should be included for a $100 stove and the $19.95 seems a little lame to charge for.

If you make coffee in the same container you cook in your pasta or soup may taste like the coffee.

Cleanup – coffee grinds are nasty to deal with in the woods and really a sealed coffee grind design you drop in may of been a better approach.

Making 2 things at once. How can you make pasta with this and sauce for example? Or tea and other? I did notice that JetBoil sells a companion cup for an additional $39 so you can switch out the cup and would be something more to buy and adds to pack size.

I noticed JetBoil sells a larger pot and a stabilizing stand which once again is nice but I wonder why not pack a larger stove?

Companion Cup & French Press Attachment

My overall feeling is that the JetBoil Personal Stove is a solid solution for the ultra light expedition for one or 2 people max. I wanted to give kudos to JetBoil for innovating around the weakness of the product and incorporating companion cups, larger pot and utensils.

Recently, I went camping and was thinking about a folding kitchen table setup to prepare food on. I came across the REI Camp Kitchen and seems to be an excellent camping or tailgating gadget. The aluminum and steel design has space on the left and right for food preparation (or mixing drinks) and a wind covered center portion for the portable grill.

On my last camping trip the wind was so strong it was difficult to shield the stove to stay lit.

Key Points about the design I like:

Heat-resistant prep areas so you don’t have to worry about that hot pan

Aluminum design to resist rust

Compact design that folds into a bag (i like anything that fits in a case)

Food Pantry (Not sure on that point, squirrels & raccoons are pretty good at finding food so maybe dry good storage (paper plates, silverware, cups)

Hooks on the front of the countertops to hang spatulas and smore tools

The Pole that extends over the area to hang a lantern.

Storage for Cooler under the table (Beer needs to be close by!)

Portable Bag

Just the Portable Kitchen

I like North Face tents and always impressed with the higher end versions. Sure they are 2-3x as much as a standard tent but when you are going into the outdoors you want the best equipment you can have. I did a few Outward Bound trips and during the 31 day excursions you realize what’s important to you. This 4 season, 3 person tent is ready to face extreme conditions! Hitting a high altitude adventure?

This has multiple ways to fasten the tent down with no-stretch Kevlar lines and Featherlite poles that are super lightweight. The windows are tested to -60 degrees and weighs 9-10 pounds.
